The day I saw Elijah’s profile and read his story, I knew I needed to reach out to him. Something just “clicked” with me. About 3 weeks later I received my first response from him and it was like I had found a lost sibling.
Even my husband Mike and my Mom (who he calls
Mama K) have started writing him!
Elijah’s friendship has become such a huge part of my life- Both of us now call each other “lil sis” and “big bro”. Neither of our childhoods were fairytales and I thought no one could understand my past pain- but he does.
He helps remind me that my past does not define me and encourages me to believe in myself and take chances. I can honestly say I have never known such honestly and gratitude. He doesn’t take anything for granted. That is something we all should learn.
He is a talented writer and he never fails to touch my heart with his words, and the rawness of his poetry makes me teary. I am very proud to call Elijah Joubert my pen pal and my brother!

Experiences with the mental illness of family members made Lottie realize that many times people make horrible mistakes in life because of mitigating factors and not because they are horrible people.
